Built for headless CMS agencies — 14-day free trial

Headless CMS deployments have more
SSL and DNS surface than you think.

Headless CMS agencies deploy client sites across production, staging, and preview environments — each on separate subdomains with separate CDN CNAME delegations. A CDN edge provider change, an IaC misconfiguration, or a client nameserver migration can break staging and preview subdomains independently of production, leaving content editors unable to review work. Merlonix monitors the full SSL and DNS layer across all environments.

Where headless CMS agencies get caught out

Three failure modes specific to headless CMS client portfolios.

Headless CMS agencies manage client deployments with more DNS and SSL surface than any other web agency category. Multiple environments, CDN origins, and API gateways each require independent monitoring coverage that standard uptime monitoring tools do not provide.

Multi-environment subdomain drift

Staging and preview subdomains break independently of production after infrastructure changes

Headless CMS deployments typically run three environments: production at clientdomain.com, staging at staging.clientdomain.com, and content preview at preview.clientdomain.com. Each environment has a separate CNAME delegation to the CDN origin. When a CDN edge provider change, a Terraform apply, or a client nameserver migration is applied, the change often affects environments asymmetrically — production stays up while staging breaks, or preview URLs stop working while staging is fine. Standard uptime monitoring watches one URL per client. Headless monitoring surface requires one URL per environment per client.

CDN CNAME misconfiguration

CDN origin CNAME changes from infrastructure updates break SSL silently

Headless CMS agencies using Cloudflare, Fastly, or Vercel as CDN for client content delivery maintain CNAME records that point client subdomains to the CDN edge. When agencies update CDN configuration — rotating origins, migrating between edge providers, or changing Vercel project links — the CNAME target changes. If the DNS update is applied before the CDN configuration is fully propagated, or if the CNAME is updated at the wrong DNS zone, the subdomain stops resolving correctly. SSL certificates issued against the previous CNAME target become invalid at the new one, and the CDN re-provisioning is not automatic.

Content delivery API subdomain monitoring

Contentful, Sanity, and Strapi API gateway subdomains need independent SSL coverage

Some headless CMS deployments proxy the Contentful, Sanity, or Strapi content API through a client-branded subdomain — api.clientdomain.com or content.clientdomain.com — to avoid exposing the CMS credentials in client-side requests or to enable custom caching rules at the CDN. These API gateway subdomains have their own SSL certificates and DNS records separate from the site frontend. A certificate expiry on an API gateway subdomain breaks content delivery for the entire site without any visible frontend error — the pages load but content is missing or stale.

How it works

SSL and DNS monitoring for every headless CMS environment.

Merlonix is designed for agencies managing multi-environment headless CMS client portfolios where a single client deployment has five or more subdomains requiring independent SSL and DNS coverage — coverage that standard uptime monitoring tools cannot provide.

01

Add all environments and API subdomains per client

Verify ownership with a DNS TXT record for the apex domain. Production, staging, preview, and API gateway subdomains are all added without additional verification. Takes under two minutes per client. Every environment gets the same monitoring coverage from the start.

02

CNAME integrity monitoring for CDN delegations

Three independent DNS resolvers verify every CNAME delegation to CDN origins on every check interval. When a CDN configuration change breaks a staging or preview subdomain CNAME, the alert fires within minutes — before content editors trying to review the next campaign encounter a broken preview URL.

03

SSL chain validation across all environments

Full certificate chain monitoring for every subdomain across all environments. Production, staging, preview, and API gateway certificates are each validated independently. A certificate expiry on the Contentful API proxy subdomain fires immediately — not when content stops loading on the production site.

04

Vendor status monitoring for CMS and CDN providers

Merlonix monitors Contentful, Cloudflare, Vercel, and Fastly platform status alongside client SSL and DNS. When a Contentful API degradation causes content delivery failures across multiple clients simultaneously, you see the vendor event correlated with client-side symptoms before clients start reporting issues.

What the numbers mean for headless CMS agencies

Monitoring built for multi-environment headless infrastructure.

Headless CMS agencies manage client deployments with more DNS and SSL surface per client than any other web agency category. Merlonix gives headless CMS agencies the coverage depth and cross-environment visibility that standard uptime tools cannot match.
